MICHAEL RUIZ

OUR TAKE
With installations, viewers are invited to focus on forms, environment, and materials, allowing the settings to create visual dialogue. Taking his painting beyond the canvas, Ruiz tampers with the preservation of form and function. His installations speak to the influence of modern endeavors on our cultural perceptions. Drawing ties to conceptual art, street art, and modern conventions, Ruiz’s paintings and structures draw attention to futility and cultural relevance. As a long-time supporter of the arts in San Diego, we wish him the best in his MFA program and look forward to seeing his work evolve.

BIO
Michael Ruiz is a multi-media artist with a focus on painting and installation. Michael holds a B.A. in Art, from the University of California, Berkeley and is currently pursuing a visual art MFA at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Michael’s painting examines imagery that conveys a passage of time and how as a society we impact our surroundings. “The bits and pieces of structures that have aged to a point of uselessness are both beautiful and relevant to me. I am fascinated with decay.”

His installation work juxtaposes cultural iconography with contemporary imagery by incorporating period objects and reframing their identity into a combined representation of cultural stereotypes.
